Governed Cognition is AIDE’s practice for organizing AI-supported work so that purpose, authority, structure, evidence, constraints, and revision remain visible enough for human judgment.

The conditions that make cognitive work answerable.
These are not a rigid sequence or a universal theory of cognition.
They are the conditions AIDE seeks to keep explicit when AI contributes to consequential human work.

Purpose
What is this work for?
The question, intended use, and decision boundary remain explicit rather than being inferred from an output.

Human authority
Who directs it and remains responsible?
Humans set direction, interpret consequences, approve consequential action, and retain final responsibility.

Representation
What situation, object, or question is being worked on?
A shared representation makes the relevant conditions and relationships available for examination.

Constraints
What must the work respect?
Boundaries, protections, commitments, and limits continue to govern the work as it develops.

Evidence
What supports, weakens, or limits a reading?
Sources, observations, and uncertainty remain distinguishable from interpretation and recommendation.

Revision & continuity
What changed, why, and what carries forward?
The work retains a reviewable record that can be challenged, revised, resumed, and stewarded over time.
Worked example
From a plausible proposal to governed cognitive work.
“We should use AI to manage customer requests” is a plausible initial proposal. Open the record to see what must be made explicit before the work can be directed, examined, and revised.
Purpose
What is the system meant to improve: response time, service quality, cost, access, or something else?
Human authority
Who defines acceptable use, resolves exceptions, and remains accountable for consequential decisions?
Constraints
What must the system not do: make commitments, infer sensitive facts, override staff judgment, or conceal uncertainty?

Follow an inquiry through evidence and challenge.
A Governed Inquiry applies this practice to a scoped engagement: frame the question, examine the situation, test the evidence, invite challenge, and prepare a usable basis for human judgment. The Port City Hospital example illustrates the approach.

A governed record allows another human—or another system working within the same boundaries—to inspect prior reasoning without rebuilding it from prompts, outputs, and memory. Traceability, stewardship, and continuity are how useful work remains available as conditions change.
