Investigative method

Structural Analysis

A method for revealing the forces, tensions, constraints, and viable paths inside a complex situation.

The Method

Begin with the Field.

Structural Analysis applies Structural Cognition Theory to a particular inquiry.

Before analysis begins, it establishes a Structural Field: a shared object through which human and AI participants can examine what is present, how it relates, where pressure accumulates, and which paths remain open. By making the situation intelligible before conclusions are drawn, the Field brings hidden dependencies, consequential tradeoffs, and viable possibilities into view—so human judgment can work with more than an answer.

The method supports understanding and comparison. It does not replace human judgment or make decisions for the operator.

How it works

From an ambiguous question to a decision-ready comparison.

Structural Analysis moves from human direction, through shared representation and examination, to interpretations tested against evidence—then returns a clearer comparison for human judgment.

  1. 01
    Frame

    Problem framing

Clarify the scope, focus, time horizon, boundary, and purpose. Surface the conditions needed for a useful inquiry.

  2. 02
    Field model

    Structural modeling

Identify the six structural components, test relations, preserve unresolved ambiguity, and check whether the representation is coherent enough for analysis.

  3. 03
    Diagnostics

    Diagnostic inspection

Identify structural conditions requiring attention, including dominant constraints, tensions, weak coverage, and unstable relations.

  4. 04
    Instruments

    Analytical exploration

Use defined analytical operations to expand, clarify, test, break down, project, or otherwise develop the representation.

  5. 05
    Derived analysis

    Structural evaluation

Examine forces, dynamics, branch points, and structurally plausible trajectories emerging from the processed field.

  6. 06
    Evidence

    Evidence integration

Structural interpretations are evaluated against available empirical evidence to distinguish well-supported conclusions from unresolved structural possibilities.

  7. 07
    Synthesis

    Decision-ready synthesis

Produce decision-ready structural comparisons, meaningful contrasts, risks, unresolved conditions, and viable branches without choosing for the operator.

Copper: human purpose initiates the work and judgment receives it back. Blue: the Field is established and examined. Green: structural interpretations are checked against evidence.

Illustrative walkthrough

One inquiry, made inspectable.

This fictional case follows Port City Hospital as it tries to understand why admitted patients are sometimes still waiting for a bed in the emergency department. Structural Analysis and Archimedes help make the problem visible before leaders decide what to do.

The case file is an editorial rendering of structured written artifacts from an Archimedes analysis. It illustrates Structural Analysis; it is not Archimedes’ live operating interface.

00 · The Situation

Why are patients waiting for a bed?

At Port City Hospital, people who have already been admitted can sometimes wait for hours in the emergency department before an appropriate inpatient bed is ready for them.

The case at this point

Patients need to move to a bed after admission. When that does not happen, the emergency department becomes more crowded and staff have to manage more pressure in the same space. The hospital has beds—but an empty room may not yet be ready, suitable, or assigned for the person who needs it.

Why Structural Analysis

Hospital leaders need a better account before acting. Structural Analysis helps them examine the problem as a connected situation: not just how many beds exist, but how patients, discharge, room readiness, staffing, and timing fit together. Archimedes supports that inquiry; the administration retains the decision.

What this does not establish yet

The initial situation does not show why patients are waiting for a bed, which conditions matter most, or what the hospital should change.

Case Brief

This is the situation supplied for analysis—the practical problem that makes a structured inquiry necessary.

What patients experience

They have been admitted but are still waiting for a bed where the next phase of care can occur.

What the hospital experiences

The emergency department becomes crowded, transfers may be delayed, and staff manage more pressure in the same space.

The question

Is the hospital simply short of beds—or are several connected conditions preventing a bed from being available when it is needed?

Based on an actual Archimedes analysis; edited here for public readability.

This is a fictional illustrative case. It is not a clinical, operational, or causal finding about any real hospital.

What it produces

A clearer surface for judgment.

Structural Analysis produces a decision surface: a comparison of meaningful paths, dependencies, vulnerabilities, tradeoffs, and unresolved conditions. It helps the responsible person see what each path may set in motion before they commit.

Inquiry frameScope, horizon, boundary, and purpose.
Structural configurationThe relevant forces, constraints, tensions, branches, and implications.
Evidence assessmentWhat supports a claim, how strongly, and where structural and empirical accounts conflict.
Decision surfaceA neutral comparison of meaningful paths, vulnerabilities, dependencies, and unresolved conditions.

When to use it

Begin with the situation you need to navigate.

A few possible starting inquiries.

Archimedes begins by establishing or clarifying the field before offering interpretation.

Current implementation

Archimedes puts the method into practice.

Structural Analysis is a general analytical method. Archimedes is the current instrument built around it. It constructs and processes Structural Cognitive Fields to support explicit analysis while preserving ambiguity, evidence limits, and operator authority. Its dynamic analysis is not prediction.
