Cognitive Systems Observability

A framework, modules, protocols, and standards for observing effective action.

CSO makes the conditions of effective, authorized action inspectable through a framework, distinct observation modules, defined protocols, and reviewable standards.

Monitor constraints, goals, orientation, relevance, concepts, coherence, and agency through time.
Protocols
Specify how observations are made and interpreted: what evidence is inspected, how structural change is identified, and how legitimacy is assessed.

Across the AI industry, systems are increasingly engineered through explicit layers: workflow, tools, context, execution, security, governance, and interpretability. This is a meaningful shift away from treating a larger model as the whole solution.

These developments give context to AIDE Research: they clarify adjacent approaches, make comparison more concrete, and sharpen where direct evidence is still needed.

AIDE asks whether the structure of a representation changes what can be understood without reducing inquiry to model internals alone.

Intellectual context

Human judgment must remain visible.

John Nosta's writing on artificial intelligence, human agency, and the risk of confusing fluent output with thought has been an important source of intellectual inspiration for AIDE. His concern that delegation can weaken judgment helps motivate AIDE's emphasis on explicit authority, traceability, and human decision responsibility.

His argument for deliberate separation rather than seamless fusion between human and machine cognition also informs AIDE's human-authority boundary. AIDE treats these as adjacent philosophical concerns, not as settled empirical conclusions.

The structure of reasoning is itself an object of inquiry.

Across the developments represented here, systems increasingly make workflow, tools, context, policy, and model behavior explicit. The structure of a complex situation is still rarely examined as a shared object of inquiry.

AIDE investigates whether the way a situation is represented changes what human and AI participants can examine together: its actors, conditions, constraints, tensions, dependencies, evidence, and viable paths.

AIDE compares its programs with relevant work in workflow, context engineering, model safety, interpretability, prompting, and model capability.
