Structural Cognition Theory

A proposed theory that representing a situation as a structured field can help make pressures, viable paths, and conditional trajectories available for examination.

It asks what is present, how the parts relate, what limits them, where they conflict, what remains unresolved, and what may follow.

The field

The Structural Field

Structural Cognition Theory represents a situation as a Structural Field:

The Field is an organized representation of six primitives: Elements, Relations, Constraints, Tensions, Ambiguities, and Implications. Together, they show what is present, how it is connected, what limits it, where conflict or uncertainty resides, and what follows conditionally from the structure.

Establishing the Field does not settle the situation. It creates a coherent object that can be inspected, questioned, and revised.

From interactions within the Field, additional structures may become visible. This explorer introduces eight: Forces, Dynamics, Feedback Loops, Branches, Regimes, Transitions, Archetypes, and Multiplicity. These are derived readings rather than additional primitives, and they represent only part of what may be examined through SCT.

Connections to the Structural Field indicate composition: the six primitives constitute the Field. Other connections indicate direct structural relationships between components.

The distinctions

Four distinctions that guide interpretation of the field.

Structure and evidence answer different questions.

A coherent representation shows what follows conditionally from a given configuration. Evidence determines what is actually supported in the world.

Ambiguity and multiplicity are not the same.

Ambiguity is uncertainty about the field. Multiplicity is the existence of more than one structurally admissible configuration.

Incomplete information does not prevent useful reasoning.

A partial field may still support useful analysis while information, relations, or interpretations remain unresolved.

Structural dominance does not confer decision authority.

One configuration may be structurally stronger than the alternatives without determining what must be chosen. Authority and responsibility remain human.

SCT informs AIDE’s Structural Analysis method and parts of its cognitive-system architecture. It is a developed theory within Structured Reasoning and an active line of inquiry in AIDE Research.
